Behind the Liberty Cotton Lawns: Sustainable End‑of‑Line Fabrics

Liberty cotton lawn is renowned for its finest cotton fibres, fine weave, vibrant prints and luxurious feel. The fabric begins its journey in Liberty’s London studio, where designers create intricate prints, and then it is produced at Liberty’s family‑run printing mill  near Lake Como, Italy. Before printing, the plain white cotton base cloth is prepared by a local textile mill to create the perfect canvas for each design. After printing, the fabrics are steamed, washed and finished using both rotary screen and digital techniques, ensuring rich colour and exquisite detail.

For over 10 years, we have collaborated with a traditional London-based furrier, supporting British craftsmanship and preserving a specialist skill that is rapidly disappearing.

Vintage fur is already in circulation, meaning no new animals are harmed and no additional demand is created. The fur used by Philippa London comes from animals that died many years ago, making it an ethical and responsible alternative to newly produced materials.

Buying pre-owned or vintage fur also helps prevent high-quality garments from ending up in landfill. When properly cared for, vintage fur can last for decades, giving it a low environmental impact compared to fast-fashion alternatives.

Nestled just off the bustling Westbourne Grove, this stylish corner of London is known for its independent spirit, home to boutiques like Penelope Chilvers and Pippa Small, the newlly opened NWU, and Aime cult-favorate lifestyle spots including Sézane and Reformation, and beloved cafés like Ottolenghi.

Visitors explored our Spring/Summer 2025 collection surrounded by the area’s unmistakable charm — a blend of effortless elegance, artisanal design, and modern femininity.

It was a joy to welcome so many of you, both familiar faces and new friends, for a beautiful two days of fashion and conversation.

Our first drop arrived in March gave a utility look: of natural indigo denim reimagined in crisp silhouettes. The Sister Tulip Denim Blouse made its debut with striking topstitching and ribbon detailing — part of a versatile three-piece capsule that includes a blouse, skirt and tailored trouser. A seamless blend of function and form, these are pieces designed to carry you from day to dusk with ease.

Soon after, our buttercup and off-white story bloomed — sunshine in garment form. Using exquisite dead stock fabric, this limited drop features the reimagined Tulip Blouse — now in dreamy, archival Liberty florals — alongside the debut of the Stella Dress, a piece destined to become a modern heirloom.

Our palette turns romantic: rose pinks, plum, off-white, and deep green — worked into breathable cotton lawn, crisp poplins, khaki twills, and lustrous Dupion silks. These tones echo across our signature leatherwear, too: the Louie Skirt and Grace Jackets reappear in elegant new shades of green, plum, and silver — a perfect harmony of softness and strength.

THE SMALL BRAND EDIT

PHILIPPA LONDON 

When I polled subscribers on what they most loved about the DDE, new brand discoveries was top of the list. This will become a regular feature, putting the spotlight on small British brands creating beautiful dresses and more!

A big welcome to Pip Chawner, founder of Philippa London on being the first business to be highlighted. With her keen attention to detail and impeccable taste, Pip creates pieces that will become firm forever favourites in your wardrobe. I loved her very candid answers to my questions which involve the necessity of white wine, learning from mistakes and channelling Charlotte Rampling.

What made you start your brand?

I really missed working in the clothing industry after years of working in buying, sourcing and production. After my 3rd child I started a personal styling business and that was when I thought about creating a brand myself as I saw so many gaps for women to find those perfect pieces.

I started working with an agency developing some silk blouses. It was all going very well when suddenly the day of shipment I received a phone call to say they would not ship unless I ordered double the quantity! I learnt a very important lesson; start small, stay local and work with traditional craftmanship.

Where are your pieces made?

Everything is made in London and I have become a big advocate of traditional British craft. Making in the UK is a very important part of the brand and I very much hope this continues to develop. My pattern cutter, machinist and whole team have been working together for years and are exceptionally talented.

Who are your dream customers and why?

I’ve always loved 70’s style icons like Charlotte Rampling and Jane Birkin and use references from that era while I’m designing my pieces. I’m inspired by that whole big hat, midi skirts and knee high boots look.

 

How did your previous career in fashion help you set up your own brand?

It helped me in understanding how to make great quality garments and also helped me understand the importance of fostering relationships with all partners involved to make these beautiful pieces. It really is a labour of love.

 

What advice would you give to anyone starting their own small brand?

I would start with developing one perfect product, then go from there.

What is the highlight so far with your brand?

My silver skirt was worn by Alex Jones on The One Show a couple of weeks ago and generated lots of new followers. But for me, just seeing my garments being worn and enjoyed gives me such a buzz.

How do you manage the juggle of running your own business?

Get up early, brilliant friends and family, and white wine!
